TransplantApp - Corneal Donor Reporting Platform

Our team collaborated with transplant coordinators and medical professionals to develop TransplantApp - a digital platform aimed at addressing critical inefficiencies in the corneal donor referral process.

Built specifically for Poland's transplant care system, where over 3,000 patients await transplants annually, the platform simplifies donor registration by automating and digitizing outdated, manual workflows. Physicians can now refer potential donors in just a few clicks, minimizing communication delays and paperwork.

TransplantApp is currently operational in three hospitals and Poland's largest corneal tissue bank.

In Poland, around 1,000 corneal transplants are carried out annually - yet over 3,000 patients remain on waiting lists. A major bottleneck lies in the limited number of donor referrals, driven in part by the lack of digital tools that could streamline reporting and by low awareness among physicians about donor eligibility criteria.

This issue extends beyond Poland. In many countries, donor registration and transplant coordination remain largely manual and fragmented. Reporting a potential donor still often involves phone calls and handwritten forms, which is an outdated process prone to delays, miscommunication, and missed opportunities.

Additional challenges include workforce shortages, unequal access to tissue banks, low levels of digitalization, and a lack of decision-support systems, all of which complicate the donor-matching process and put patient outcomes at risk.

To address these issues, the ArtNovation team partnered with transplant coordinators and clinicians to create TransplantApp - a modern platform designed to:

• Enable quick reporting of potential cornea donors
• Automatically generate a standardized donor qualification report (PDF)
• Notify Eye Tissue Banks via SMS and secure digital channels
• Guide eligibility checks through a simple, algorithm-based form

From day one, the app was built hand-in-hand with the medical community to ensure it integrates seamlessly into existing clinical workflows.

TransplantApp has been rolled out in three hospitals and Poland’s largest corneal tissue bank. Since launch, the system has helped register over 150 potential donors - a meaningful improvement in a field long plagued by critical tissue shortages.

The app simplifies and standardizes the reporting process, allowing physicians to complete eligibility forms, check contraindications, and submit donor referrals in just a few clicks. It replaces paper-based procedures and reduces reliance on phone communication, cutting down on errors and delays.

Clinicians say the tool reduces their administrative load, improves response times in critical situations, and provides valuable support for complex decisions. The digital format also enables consistent data collection - useful for audits and process optimization.

More broadly, TransplantApp addresses one of the most urgent problems in Polish transplant care: the low number of donor referrals. For years, the system lacked tools that could support doctors in real-time, everyday work. This app changes that, boosting referral rates and improving patient access to life-changing procedures.

TransplantApp proves how the right digital tools can drive real progress in healthcare. Praised for its ease of use and functionality, the solution has earned long-term trust, evidenced by a two-year (and counting) partnership with the Eye Tissue Bank.
